James Weddell, who was born in Belgium in 1787, was a British sailor, navigator and seal hunter. In February of 1823 he sailed to a latitude of 74°15' S, into a region of the Southern Ocean that later became known as the Weddell Sea. The trip was conceived as a commercial enterprise, but when reading A Voyage Towards the South Pole it becomes difficult to believe it was so. What we find is a voyage to a dreamlike country, full of islands that disappear when you approach them, animals that refuse to show themselves, and giants who turn out to be quite short.

A Voyage Towards the South Pole is the work of an efficient and stubborn sailor who was interested in everyone and everything around him. The trip was conceived as a commercial enterprise, but when reading this book that becomes hard to believe. What we find instead is a voyage to a dreamlike country, full of islands that disappear when you approach them, of animals that refuse to show themselves, and giants of short stature.
